Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an eye condition caused by infection or allergies. It is Also known as Pink eye, It is an inflammation of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. This membrane is called the conjunctiva. When small blood vessels in the conjunctiva become swollen and irritated, they’re more visible. This is what causes the whites of the eyes to appear reddish or pink.

Check if you have conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is also known as red or pink eye.

It usually affects both eyes and makes them:

  • red
  • burn or feel gritty
  • produce pus that sticks to lashes
  • itch
  • water

Types:

  • Viral Conjunctivitis: Caused by viruses, such as adenovirus or herpes simplex virus. It is highly contagious and often accompanies respiratory infections or colds.
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Caused by bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can occur on its own or secondary to a respiratory or ear infection
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis: Triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. It tends to affect both eyes and is associated with itching, redness, and watery discharge
  • Chemical Conjunctivitis: Caused by exposure to irritants such as chemicals, smoke, or chlorine in swimming pools.

Stop infectious conjunctivitis from spreading

There are things you can do to stop conjunctivitis spreading to other people.

  • wash your hands regularly with warm soapy water

  • wash your pillow cases and face cloths in hot water and detergent

  • cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and put used tissues in the bin

  • do not share towels and pillows

  • do not rub your eyes
